Saints should consider re-signing Kwon Alexander as a backup

Kwon Alexander is still waiting to be signed and the New Orleans Saints should be interested in bringing him back. Alexander joined the Saints midway through the 2020 season and then re-signed last summer.

Now, he’s once again a free agent and is someone who could still be in a starting role for wherever he signs. A reason for why he’s probably still waiting to sign is that he’s struggled with injuries throughout his career.

While Alexander did get dinged up last year (he missed five games), he still played well and was a big part of the Saints’ defense. Losing him would be sad but the Saints might not feel the need to bring him back simply because of how well Pete Werner played as a rookie.

Nick Underhill tweeted this out last week and hit the nail on the head.

Werner is the future at linebacker for New Orleans while Alexander would just be another weapon there. He played great with Demario Davis and the goal moving forward should be to make sure that Werner gets more reps and is a bigger part of the defense.

Alexander is still worth trying to get back though as a backup if he’s interested in filling that role at this stage of his career.

Kwon Alexander worth re-signing as backup

Alexander has had a quiet free agency for the most part but he did visit the Jets last week. They’re a team that could use Alexander more so than the Saints and he’d definitely get more playing time there. The question is what’s more important to Alexander? Does he want to win or does he want to be a starter?

If the answer is option 2, the Jets are a good landing spot for him.

While I’d like to see the New Orleans Saints re-sign Kwon Alexander, he showed last season that he can be relatively healthy and teams will have noticed that. With Pete Werner playing at the level he has been, however, Alexander isn’t a must to re-sign in free agency like he was a year ago.
