When it comes to the New Orleans Saints‘ draft plans, adding a defensive lineman might not seem like a priority but the team could opt to continue building at one of their strongest positions. Enter: Devonte Wyatt out of Georgia.

Charles Davis of NFL Network had the Saints spending the No. 16 selection on the Bulldog defensive tackle in his latest mock draft.

Here’s what Davis had to say on the selection:

"I love this guy’s competitiveness, strength, speed and bounce. He will provide consistent inside pass pressure for New Orleans."

It’s hard to argue with that. Wyatt would bring a ferociousness to the defensive line in the Big Easy and it’s an area where they’ve excelled in recent years. Why not continue to make the pass-rush a dominating force and strike fear into opposing offenses?

Furthermore, the Saints could lose both David Onyemata and Marcus Davenport next offseason, as both defenders are slated to become free agents. Onyemata is currently the team’s starting left defensive tackle and that’s where the Saints could slot in the Georgia product if Onyemata isn’t retained.

Even better for the case of taking Wyatt is that he’s versatile and could play just about anywhere on the d-line. This means he could also be a potential replacement for Davenport at right defensive end as well.

Saints Draft: Devonte Wyatt makes sense for New Orleans

Some might feel as though the team needs to spend their first-round selections on the offensive side of the ball and no one would fault them for doing that. At the same time, however, NOLA can’t ignore the defense. Adding Wyatt would continue to put that side of the ball in a strong position to succeed moving forward.

The Georgia Bulldog finished his senior campaign with 39 tackles and 2.5 sacks through 13 games and was a huge part of the team winning the National Championship. He’d be an excellent addition to the NOLA defense and could be the future replacement for either Onyemata or Davenport depending on how free agency goes next offseason.
