The biggest mistake the Saints could make in the 2022 NFL Draft
The New Orleans Saints have to make the most of their draft picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, especially since they now won’t have a first-round pick in next year’s draft due to a recent trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.
That trade did, however, give the Saints two first-round picks for this year, which has a lot of fans thinking that a possible trade up to nab a quarterback could be in the cards. This is a big worry of mine as well and it’s something the Saints shouldn’t do.
Now armed with two picks in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, New Orleans needs to use those selections to address its biggest needs. Those would be at wide receiver and left tackle, both of which need help desperately.
Reaching on a quarterback would be a huge mistake and it’s something the Saints need to avoid doing when draft weekend kicks off.
Saints’ biggest draft mistake would be reaching on QB
This isn’t a good year to be relying on the draft to find a quarterback, as this year’s class leaves little to be desired. Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett appear to be the top two options but neither guy is probably ready to be thrust into a starting role.
New Orleans went all in trying to trade for Deshaun Watson and it didn’t work out in their favor, so then they “settled” on Jameis Winston, bringing him back on a two-year deal. Perhaps Winston is looked at as more of a one-year bridge quarterback while he mentors an incoming quarterback but this isn’t the route the Saints should take.
Maybe they do end up drafting a signal-caller but it shouldn’t be one they have to reach on. If someone like Sam Howell or Matt Corral is on the board when NOLA is selecting in round two, that’d be an okay move and one that I’d approve of. But trying to land either of those guys or Desmond Ridder in the first round would be a mistake.
