Saints Free Agency: Grading J.P. Holtz signing in 2022 offseason
While Saints free agency has mostly been pretty slow, the New Orleans Saints have been signing some lesser-known names over the past few days. The latest to join the team is tight end, J.P. Holtz.
A former Pittsburgh Panther from 2012-2015, Holtz went undrafted in 2016 and later signed with the Browns where he never saw the field in the regular season. He joined Washington in the 2018 season and it wasn’t until his 2019 season that he actually saw some playing time, albeit on special teams, but hey, that counts.
Holtz then moved on to Chicago where he put up the only offensive numbers of his career, recording seven catches for 91 yards through 14 games and seven starts. Holtz remained with the Bears for the past two years but didn’t find the field except for on special teams.
Saints Free Agency: What grade does J.P. Holtz signing deserve?
There’s no debating that New Orleans needs help at the tight end position but this is a signing that is hard to get excited about. Holtz only has seven catches for 91 yards throughout his career and he’s not going to be someone who can stretch the field for the Saints offense.
We have to be honest about what this Holtz signing is and it’s simply a camp body. New Orleans might need help at tight end but Holtz isn’t a better option than what NOLA already has in Juwan Johnson, Adam Trautman, and Nick Vannett. They might also still decide to draft a tight end, adding to the depth chart.
So, with all of this in mind, what grade do I give the Holtz signing? I’ll go with a D+ because Holtz probably isn’t making the roster and even if he does, he won’t be doing much on offense. He has experience on special teams, which is why I didn’t give this signing an F but yeah, I wouldn’t expect much from the Pittsburgh product.
