The New Orleans Saints haven’t had a splashy free agency so far but even with that being the case, they’ve still made some smart moves. Let’s check out a few.

It was a slow start to free agency for the New Orleans Saints, mostly because they decided to throw their hat into the Deshaun Watson ring and it didn’t end with Watson picking the black and gold.

Be that as it may, that hasn’t stopped the Saints from making some impressive moves. They haven’t done a ton, but these three moves (with one being a move the team didn’t make) deserve to be discussed.

3. Signing Andy Dalton as backup QB

Entering the 2022 season, the Saints needed a quarterback and they got both their starter and backup in the span of a week and a half. New Orleans signed Andy Dalton this week in a move that has been mostly popular amongst the fan base.

Dalton isn’t a starting quarterback anymore and that’s why the Saints didn’t sign him to be that. He’ll slide behind Jameis Winston as the starter and that puts the team in a decent position to win if Winston is forced to miss an extended period of time.

Last year, the Saints had Trevor Siemian as a backup and while that didn’t go well, it wasn’t all on Siemian. Dalton is a better backup option than Siemian and if Winston is forced to miss time, the Saints should still be competitive with Dalton stepping in to lead the offense.

If it wasn’t Dalton, it’d be a battle between second-year man Ian Book and The Good Place favorite Blake Bortles to see who’d back up Winston. I like Dalton the most out of this bunch.
