3 Saints free agent predictions after Deshaun Watson chose Browns
By Najy Masri
Wide Receiver
Current WRs on roster: Michael Thomas, Marquez Callaway, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Kawaan Baker, Kevin White, Easop Winston Jr, JJ McCleskey, Kirk Merritt
Most Saints fans would serve well to forget the state of the Saints wide receiver room last season without Michael Thomas. Preseason sensation Marquez Callaway failed to live up to expectations as the Saints de-facto No. 1 WR. Deonte Harris was limited throughout the season by injury and suspension. Flyers such as Kenny Stills and Kevin White failed to provide the Saints with any perimeter wide receiver help.
Current available wide receivers on the free-agent market include a pair of former LSU teammates in Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham. Beckham, whose ACL injury in the Super Bowl will likely result in him missing the beginning of next season, is rumored to still be on the Los Angeles Rams radar, despite the recent addition of Allen Robinson.
One potential fallout from such a possible transaction would be the availability of Robert Woods, who also is recovering from his own ACL injury, via a trade. Other potential free agent targets include Will Fuller, Jamison Crowder, and AJ Green.
Given the current roster, expect the Saints to likely address WR both in free agency as well as the draft. The Saints would be hard-pressed to pass on one of the top five WR in this year’s draft – Jameson Williams, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Treylon Burks, and Drake London – if they were available at 18. Day 2 targets include Georgia’s George Pickens, North Dakota State’s Christian Watson, and Purdue’s David Bell.
Prediction: Saints sign Jarvis Landry to a two-year deal worth $24 million and draft Ohio State’s Chris Olave in the first round
