This would be the worst possible trade package for the Saints, as they’d not only be losing their next three first-round picks but they’d also have to part ways with two of their more talented young players.
Erik McCoy is entering the final year of his rookie contract after NOLA spent a second-round pick on him in the 2019 NFL Draft. He’s played center and right guard during his three-year tenure with the Saints and missed five games this past season due to injury. He’s one of the best young centers in the league and the Texans would be getting a beast with him on board.
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson was a fourth-round pick by the Saints in that same 2019 draft. He’s also entering the final year of his rookie contract and it’s very possible that the Texans would extend both of these players as soon as they landed in Houston.
Saints fans would be devastated to see both McCoy and Gardner-Johnson go but it’s understandable why the Texans would want to make this trade. They’d get three extra first-round picks, a studly versatile offensive lineman, and a feisty defensive back who isn’t shy about trash-talking.
This would be the most costly deal for New Orleans but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Texans ask for something this expensive.
What do you think it’d take for the Saints to land Deshaun Watson?
