There’s a solid chance that New Orleans can’t afford to pay Marcus Williams what he’s looking to make on the free-agent market and if that ends up being the case, they’ll need to find a decent safety option to step in and replace him. Marcus Maye could be that guy.

Prior to the 2021 season, the Jets placed the franchise tag on Maye, just as NOLA did with Williams. Maye went on to not be the same guy he had previously been and, to add salt to the wounds, he was injured. He only played in six games and didn’t look the same.

Despite all of that, Maye has shown in years past that he can be one of the better safeties in the league. He’s entering his age-30 season and was banged up last year, so that could make him an affordable option who is worth the risk for New Orleans.

It’s possible that Maye isn’t the same player he once was but the Saints might need to replace Williams if he leaves and Maye could be an option to take over.
