4 New Orleans Saints on the rise heading into 2022 season
1. Marquez Callaway
With Michael Thomas initially thought to miss the first half of the 2021 season, Marquez Callaway became a popular breakout candidate for the Saints. It made sense, as the undrafted wide receiver had shown enough in his rookie year that fans felt like he could be a playmaker in the offense.
Unfortunately, fans put too much stock into Callaway emerging as a true receiving threat. The guy went undrafted for a reason and it was unfair for everyone to assume he was going to be this world-beater offensively.
Callaway did end up posting solid numbers, finishing his second season with 46 receptions for 698 yards and six touchdowns. In two of his final four games, he went over the 90-yard receiving mark and showed that he can be a strong WR3 in an offense.
With Thomas set to return as the WR1 and the Saints hopefully landing a wide receiver early on in the 2022 NFL Draft, Callaway won’t have all of the pressure mounting on him entering the season. He’ll be comfortable in that WR3 role and should put together his best season yet.
