As NFL free agency inches closer, the New Orleans Saints have to figure out who they want to cut and who they want to keep moving forward. One underrated name hitting free agency is defensive back, P.J. Williams.

Williams has spent the entirety of his six-year career with the Saints and he’s someone the team should absolutely re-sign this offseason.

A former third-round pick out of Florida State, Williams’ career has been up and down but he was solid in 2021, posting a PFF grade of 70.0. He had 42 tackles, five defended passes, four QB hits, three interceptions, and two sacks. One of the interceptions Williams hauled in, he took back the other way for a pick-six.

This is the fourth straight year where Williams has been a free agent and he’s re-signed with New Orleans every time he’s hit free agency. While fans have been pretty hot and cold on Williams, he deserves another contract with the Saints if he’s willing to come back and don the black and gold for another season.

Saints should re-sign P.J. Williams

With Marcus Williams potentially leaving in free agency and Malcolm Jenkins a possible cap casualty, retaining P.J. Williams becomes even more important. He’s good in the role that the Saints have carved out for him and pairs well with C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

With the other Williams (Marcus) perhaps not being on the team when the 2022 season gets underway, it’s important for New Orleans to keep as much of this defense together as possible. P.J. Williams has continued to re-sign with NOLA year after year so he clearly likes the team. It’d be weird seeing him with another team at this point but he is coming off arguably his best season of his career. Would another team pony up and offer him more than a one-year deal?
