Saints mock draft: Dennis Allen era begins with first-round stud
Round 3: Pick 102 – Bailey Zappe, QB (Western Kentucky)
New Orleans lucked out with being able to find a quarterback in this draft, as Bailey Zappe was still there for the taking when they were on the clock in the third round. The Western Kentucky signal-caller appeared in the Senior Bowl and had the most passing yards for the American Team.
Zappe finished the Senior Bowl going 8-of-13 for 103 yards and an interception. He’s not going to be the immediate answer in New Orleans but sitting for at least a year could do wonders for the Hilltopper gun slinger.
The Saints need a quarterback and with them passing on the position in the first two rounds, they were lucky to be able to land Zappe as late as they did. He’s not the starting option for 2022 but if they can get a veteran guy for this season to work with Zappe, he’d definitely be someone they could lean on in 2023 and hopefully beyond.
Zappe’s lone season at Western Kentucky saw him throw for just shy of 6,000 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Yes, he played against weaker teams than the other quarterbacks so the stats are definitely inflated but Zappe is someone who could do a lot of damage with this team in the future.
