The NOLA Saints have a new head coach and his name is Dennis Allen. The defensive coordinator of the last seven seasons is now the man tasked with following in Sean Payton’s footsteps.

This decision isn’t a shocking one for New Orleans, who had to search for a new head coach for the first time since 2006 when they hired Payton. Aside from the 2011 season where Payton was suspended, he was the man running things in the Big Easy since 2006 and it’ll be weird not having him around.

With that said, Allen seemed like the likely hire from the moment Payton’s news became official. The organization still conducted a proper search, which was wise, but in the end, Allen was the chosen one and for the most part, fans are okay with this.

NOLA Saints hired Dennis Allen as next head coach

Allen stepped into the coaching shoes when Payton missed the road game in Tampa and led the Saints to a 9-0 shutout win over the explosive Buccaneers. That game paired with the success the defense has seen since Allen took over helped get Allen to this point and it’ll be interesting to see how things go with him at the helm.

I like this tweet from Chris Rosvoglou because it’s so true. People might point to the failed stint Allen had as the Raiders’ head coach but that was nearly a decade ago. Allen joined the Saints after he was fired from the Raiders and there aren’t many coaches better to learn from than Payton.

Some fans might have wanted another offensive-minded coach considering the team’s struggles on offense but Allen made the most sense for the team. He has the respect of the locker room and has shown that he can lead the team already.
