New Orleans Saints Passing Leaders – 8. Steve Walsh (3,879)

Saints Quarterback from 1990-1993

The first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Supplemental Draft was Steve Walsh of Miami. This was surprising, as the Cowboys had already taken Troy Aikman with the first overall pick in the regular draft so it wasn’t a shock when Walsh was shipped off after a little over a year.

The Saints landed Walsh in exchange for their first and third round picks in the 1991 NFL Draft. The former Hurricane quarterback spent the next three seasons in New Orleans and helped get the black and gold to their second-ever playoff appearance during the 1990 season.

When Bobby Hebert returned to the team (he was in a contract dispute during the 1990 season), Walsh lost his job and only appeared in 10 games over the final two seasons. He did not appear in a single game during the 1992 season. The Saints waived him in early 1994 and he’d finish his career with stints with the Bears, Rams, Buccaneers, and Colts before retiring after the 1999 season.

Walsh’s final numbers with the Saints were 3,879 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.
