Davenport’s Resurgence

Entering the 2021 season, most fans had written Marcus Davenport off. The former first-round pick hadn’t shown much of anything during his first three years and also struggled to stay healthy.

It was a surprise when the team opted to pick up Davenport’s fifth-year option considering all that had gone wrong in his first three years as a pro football player. Now they look like geniuses for doing so.

Davenport was injured in the first game of the season but he had three tackles and a sack in the blowout win over the Packers. When he returned in Week 7, he went a couple of weeks without getting to the quarterback but he’d soon hit an electric streak where he had at least one sack in three straight games.

Davenport ended an important fourth season with 39 tackles, 16 QB hits, and nine sacks proving that he was indeed worth trading up for in the 2018 NFL Draft. Because the Saints picked up his fifth-year option, Davenport will be back in 2022, which wouldn’t have been the case otherwise. He should continue to stay hungry in order to land a big contract in the 2023 offseason.
