Round 2: Pick 44 – Carson Strong, QB (Nevada)

The Saints have several different options in the offseason when it comes to the quarterback position. They could opt to re-sign Jameis Winston, roll with Taysom Hill, sign or trade for someone in free agency, or find their guy in the 2022 NFL Draft.

In this mock draft, the team goes with Nevada’s Carson Strong, who at one point was a first-round prospect but has recently become a name to watch on Day of the draft. It’s still early, of course, but Strong is someone who has been linked to the Saints throughout the season, mostly due to their need at quarterback.

Strong has the big arm that NFL teams want to see in their quarterback and he put up good numbers for the Wolfpack in 2021. He finished the year with 4,186 yards, 36 touchdowns, and eight interceptions through 12 games, which is pretty good. He did that in the Mountain West, but hey — He still played well.

Strong isn’t much of a running quarterback so he’d give the Saints another Drew Brees-like option (not saying he’ll be Brees at all) in that he’d rather stay in the pocket rather than take off and run with the football. Landing him in the draft would be interesting but it wouldn’t mean he’d start as a rookie.

The Nevada product would likely need a lot of fine-tuning before he could take over as the starting signal-caller.
