If the 2021 regular season ended today, the New Orleans Saints would be watching the playoffs from home for the first time since the 2016 season. At this point, the 6-7 Saints have a tough climb if they want to make it into the postseason.

Here’s the current NFC playoff picture:

  1. Green Bay Packers (10-3)
  2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-3)
  3. Arizona Cardinals (10-3)
  4. Dallas Cowboys (9-4)
  5. Los Angeles Rams (9-4)
  6. San Francisco 49ers (7-6)
  7. Washington Football Team (6-7)

IN THE HUNT: 8. Minnesota Vikings (6-7), 9. Philadelphia Eagles (6-7), 10. Atlanta Falcons (6-7), 11. New Orleans Saints (6-7)

As you can see, NOLA is four spots out from the playoffs. They have a favorable schedule moving forward but the Vikings, Eagles, and Falcons (who have the head-to-head over the Saints) are looking to make the playoffs as well, making New Orleans’ path to the playoffs that much more difficult.

Something that does work in the Saints’ favor is that their schedule is favorable. Aside from this weekend’s game against the Bucs, New Orleans won’t face another team with a winning record for the rest of the season.

Next up is the Bucs, but then the Saints finish the season against the Dolphins, Panthers, and Falcons. In this article, I’ll take my best guess at how New Orleans finishes off the 2021 season.
