Saints Roster: 4 players you might have forgotten about this season
2. Zack Baun
The Saints spent a third-round pick on Wisconsin’s Zack Baun and he’s become a nice special teams player, but that’s about it. Aside from a Week 2 game (where almost all of the key starters were out due to injury), Baun hasn’t played in more than 50% of the defensive snaps in a single game.
While it’s good to see Baun contributing somewhere, New Orleans didn’t spend a third-round pick on the guy for him to only play on special teams but that’s what’s happened. He was beaten out by rookie Pete Werner (who has been fantastic, by the way) and demoted to predominantly special teams duties. As a result, it’s easy to forget about Baun on the Saints roster.
On the year, Baun has totaled 20 tackles and a QB hit while also blocking a kick in that Week 2 loss to Carolina. While he’s making the most of his opportunities on special teams, that’s not really what he was drafted to do.
Special teams players tend to be forgotten as it is but for a third-round pick to come in and only make an impact there, he’s destined to fly under-the-radar. That’s exactly what Baun has done.
