When Drew Brees was the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, fans could breathe easy knowing he’d be returning under center the next year. That comfort started fading away in the past few years due to Brees’ decline in production and he hung up the cleats this past offseason after a Hall of Fame career in the Big Easy.

Now the Saints know what most other NFL teams have experienced in the past 15 years, which is not having stability at the quarterback position.

This isn’t a knock on Jameis Winston necessarily, as the former No. 1 overall pick by the Bucs in 2015 has been serviceable through five games. The reality of the situation, however, is that Winston is only signed for this season so even if he plays well, he might not be back in the Big Easy for the 2022 campaign.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports put together a list of teams who are going to be searching for a new quarterback in 2022 and the Saints made an appearance on said list.

"Jameis Winston does some nice things and New Orleans can finally push the ball downfield again. But is that enough to satisfy Sean Payton? There were some rumblings among NFL GMs that the Saints might be sniffing around on Watson, and given the overall roster strength, adding an elite veteran QB might be the way they go. They won’t sweat parting with a bunch of future picks, and Rodgers, Wilson and Watson all make a lot of sense."

Saints will be in the market for a new QB this upcoming offseason.

We’ve continued to see the Saints linked to the big guns and La Canfora continues that narrative here by mentioning Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Deshaun Watson as potential options for New Orleans.

Out of those three, Rodgers is the oldest but has three MVP titles and has aged like a fine wine. Wilson has been in the league for nearly a decade but just missed the first game of his career this season. Watson is in legal trouble but if he’s eligible to play, he’s in his mid-20s and has played like an MVP during his career.

The Saints could also turn their attention to the draft but this roster is too talented to not take a chance at one of the big-name quarterbacks. If Winston isn’t the answer and NOLA can afford to land one of the aforementioned players, they absolutely need to go for it.
