The New Orleans Saints have been trying to find a wide receiver to complement Michael Thomas for what feels like forever now. They attempt to do so in Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus’ recent mock draft with the selection of Garrett Wilson out of Ohio State.

In this mock draft, New Orleans held the 21st overall pick and took Wilson with that pick. Here’s what Sikkema had to say about why he had the Saints go in this direction:

"Wilson is another player who could be much higher in mock drafts, depending on who the author is. For me, this wide receiver class is so good and so diverse that someone is going to be picked lower than what some fans think is appropriate.Regardless of where his name is in the order, Wilson is a very talented former five-star wide receiver who brings NFL athleticism to the field every time he suits up on Saturdays. He’s a mesh-route machine when it comes to yards after the catch, and he also shows great body control and quick feet when running routes deeper down the field. He’s a three-level threat kind of player."

NOLA has frequently been linked to fellow Ohio State receiver Chris Olave throughout mock drafts so at this point, it feels like destiny that they’ll be drafting another Buckeyes wideout to pair with Michael Thomas (who also attended OSU).

New Orleans Saints select Garrett Wilson in mock draft

Wilson currently has 31 receptions for 546 yards and six touchdowns under his belt through six games this season. Last year through eight games, he finished with 43 receptions for 723 yards and six touchdowns, so unless he’s kept out of the end zone for the duration of the season, Wilson should set a new career-high in touchdowns.

New Orleans definitely needs to spend an early-round pick on a wide receiver this year, unless they trade for a big-name star at some point between now and the 2022 NFL Draft. They’ll be losing Tre’Quan Smith to free agency (and shouldn’t re-sign him) so finding a WR2 for Thomas and the offense is crucial.

Wilson might not be as big of a name as his teammate Olave but he’s still a very good receiver. Fans would likely be stoked if the Saints were able to land Wilson in the first round come April.
