3 things the Saints need to do during the BYE week to keep winning
2. Wake up Cam Jordan
Five weeks into the season, New Orleans maintains one of the league’s best defenses — they’re ranked fourth in total yards allowed and fourth in rushing yards. While they have given up the ninth-most passing yards, they are second in the league with nine interceptions. From this end, they’ve been really good but the numbers say they can get much better especially because they have a guy like Cameron Jordan lining up on their defensive line.
As a six-time Pro Bowler, including one last year, Jordan has built for himself an excellent career with Hall of Fame probability. Over his 11 year career, he’s totaled 94.5 sacks — but in five games this season, he has none. That’s a problem. He’s played well below his standards and as a leader on that side of the ball, it has reflected in the lack of success of the entire defensive line.
With only eight sacks, the Saints, as a whole, have the second-least amount of sacks in the league. Opposing quarterbacks racking up so many yards against this defense is in part because New Orlean’s front seven isn’t generating pressure as it should.
If Jordan, who had 7.5 sacks last season and a career-high 15.5 the previous year, can show up moving forward, the Saints have a chance of having one of the scariest defenses in the league.
