Saints fans shouldn’t expect much from Devine Ozigbo
After the New Orleans Saints lost Tony Jones Jr. to an injury (and it appears that he’ll be sidelined for 3-4 weeks, per Adam Schefter), it was only natural that they’d try to find another running back to add to the roster.
With Jones out, the backup to Alvin Kamara is currently Dwayne Washington, who — don’t get us wrong — is a good special teams player but letting him handle the backup duties might not be the best course of action here.
New Orleans ended up snatching Devine Ozigbo off of Jacksonville’s practice squad and reunited with the former Nebraska running back.
Devine Ozigbo is back with the Saints.
Ozigbo was a prolific running back at Nebraska who dashed for 1,082 yards and 12 touchdowns while totaling over 200 yards receiving during his senior season in 2018. He went undrafted but the Saints gave him a shot in 2019 on the practice squad but since then, he’s been with the Jaguars where he hasn’t done much.
Ozigbo has totaled just 28 yards rushing and 65 yards receiving during his 18 games with Jacksonville over the past two seasons. If he couldn’t get a consistent amount of work there, it’s probably not going to happen in New Orleans.
Schefter noted in the tweet announcing Jones’ injury that the team worked out a few different veteran running backs but maybe, at the end of the day, they decided to roll with Washington as the backup but to pick up another running back as a depth piece. That’s what Ozigbo is.
As a Nebraska fan myself, I’d love to see Ozigbo get an opportunity as a pro but more than likely, it won’t happen in the Big Easy. Or if it does, it’ll be in small doses.
