Offensive New Orleans Saints who thrived – No. 2: Tony Jones Jr.

Entering training camp, it seemed evident that Alvin Kamara would be the starting running back and Latavius Murray would be his backup. Kamara is still the starter for sure but Murray, on the other hand, has not played well.

Murray’s job might have been in jeopardy even if he hadn’t played well, as Tony Jones Jr. has broken onto the scene in a massive way, staking his claim on the 53-man roster. The Notre Dame product was in the Saints’ organization last year but didn’t get a ton of playing time so there weren’t many expectations for him this season.

Jones made us wish we hadn’t doubted him, especially in the preseason opener when he had 120 scrimmage yards along with a touchdown and really had Saints fans talking. Jones went from a dark horse to make the roster to now potentially being in the running for the backup running back spot.

I’ll be interested to see if Murray is actually cut or not but even if he does make the team, Jones should be on his heels throughout the season trying to work his way into the RB2 job.
