Saints impacted by canceled game – No. 1: Latavius Murray

It felt like a lock that Latavius Murray would make the Saints’ final roster and serve as the backup running back to Alvin Kamara. After all, Murray spent the past two seasons doing just that and did a nice job when on the field.

This preseason, however, Murray hasn’t done much of anything to prove that he deserves that backup spot. I mentioned in Devonta Freeman’s entry how Tony Jones Jr. was kicking butt and taking names this preseason and he’s looked so good that he might have worked his way into the backup role this year.

Murray, on the other hand, has totaled just nine carries for a measly 12 yards through his two games this preseason. Yes, it’s only preseason and we’ve seen what Murray can do during the regular season but he hasn’t looked like his normal self this preseason.

While Murray might still make the roster with another lackluster performance, I won’t be surprised if the Saints opt to cut him and propel Jones into the backup spot. He needed Saturday’s game to prove that he still has the explosiveness that the Saints loved about him the past two years.

These Saints needed to show something during Saturday’s game and now they won’t have the chance to do that. It’s unfortunate for these fringe-roster players but no one can really blame the Saints for canceling the game and making sure everyone is safe.
