Saints impacted by canceled game – No. 2: Devonta Freeman

Signing Devonta Freeman seemed like a smart move for the Saints but it hasn’t worked out the way they had planned. Not only has Freeman not played up to his potential but Tony Jones Jr.’s rise up the depth chart this preseason has only made it more difficult for the former Falcons running back to stake his claim on this roster.

To this point, Freeman has totaled just 13 carries for 24 yards through two preseason games. He’s had opportunities to make some kind of positive impression but has failed to break through when given the chance.

Saturday was supposed to be do or die for Freeman. He was going to have an opportunity to step up and make the most of what’s mostly been a rough situation for him but now he won’t have that chance. Freeman now has to hope the Saints won’t go off of his two lousy performances and that his excitement to join this team will be enough to keep him on the roster.

This isn’t what the Saints anticipated when they signed Freeman but with his disappointing performances and Jones’ top-notch outings, keeping Freeman on the roster wouldn’t make much sense. No game on Saturday could spell the end for the former Falcon.
