Saints impacted by canceled game – No. 4: Linebackers

This might be a copout but the linebacker battle is competitive and the Saints are going to have to cut good players as a result. The only three locks at this position are Demario Davis, Zack Baun, and Pete Werner, but the rest of the roster spots are up for grabs.

A month ago, it would have seemed laughable that it was this difficult to pick who to cut out of this linebacker group but it’s been a nice training camp for the position. Kwon Alexander joined the group a few weeks ago and he’s another likely option to make the team.

This leaves Andrew Dowell, Kaden Elliss, Chase Hansen, Wynton McManis, and Shaq Smith fighting it out for the final two spots on the team. For those who have been following along throughout training camp and the preseason, you’ll know that Dowell, Elliss, and McManis in particular have really shined bright.

The canceled game really sucks for these fringe-roster players because it could have made a major difference for guys like McManis and Dowell. Now, they’ll have to hope they did enough to make the team.

At this point, the Saints are going to have to make a difficult choice at linebacker, cutting someone who had a good summer. Who will make the biggest impression and land on the final 53-man roster?
