Saints: 4 players who need to show something in Week 2 of preseason
Saints who need to show something – No. 1: Devonta Freeman
The Saints signed Devonta Freeman a few weeks ago hoping he could shore up the running back position. The long-time Atlanta Falcon was excited to join the Saints but sure didn’t show them much in his first glimpse of action in a Saints jersey.
Freeman rushed for a measly six yards off of six carries and showed why the Falcons were willing to move on from him. Unlike Murray, Freeman isn’t a lock to make the roster and that’s why he needs to show something when the Jaguars come to town or else he’ll be a free agent once again.
The Saints know that Alvin Kamara is going to be their starter but it felt like Murray and Freeman would be the backup and third-string, respectively. Rather, Jones has popped off the page and shown that he belongs in the backup conversation now. If he leapfrogs the other guys, that’s going to leave one person left off and likely hitting free agency.
Devonta Freeman hasn’t been the same electric running back he once was for quite some time but the Saints weren’t asking him to be that. What they were expecting was for him to fill the role of a third-string option but he can’t do that if he doesn’t show any signs of being able to fill that role in these preseason games.
The pressure is on for these four Saints as the Jaguars come to the Big Easy for preseason Week 2.
