Saints who need to show something – No. 2: Latavius Murray

It has always seemed like a foregone conclusion that Latavius Murray would be the backup running back behind Alvin Kamara. Murray has been a nice compliment to Kamara since joining the Saints in 2019 and that was expected to continue in year three.

Unfortunately, Murray hasn’t had a good camp and also struggled in the first preseason game. Murray had just five carries for six yards with a long of two measly yards. It was a rough outing for him and while he still has a good shot to make the 53-man roster, his grip on the backup job is less tight now.

Murray has to have a big game against the Jaguars on Monday or else he might be fighting for more than just his backup job. If he struggles to make much of an impression in that game, it might be easy for the Saints to take a hard look at Tony Jones Jr. and what he accomplished and see him as the better option as the backup.

Here’s to hoping that Murray can pop off the page vs. Jacksonville.
