There were four Saints whose stock noticeably dropped in the preseason opener against the Ravens. The Saints lost that game by a field goal and while it’s only preseason, the game had meaning in that some players might have a tougher path to making the final roster.

Let’s take a look at four players who have to step up and show something when the Jaguars come to town for a showdown in Week 2 of preseason.

Saints who need to show something – No. 4: Pete Werner

This one seems a little unfair, as Pete Werner was injured and missed the preseason opener as a result. With injuries come the opportunity for other players to step up and state their case to play a more crucial role on the roster.

For the Saints, this opportunity was seized by second-year linebacker Zack Baun, who had himself one heck of a night vs. the Ravens. With Baun’s explosive outing, it puts Werner in a spot now where he has to be nearly flawless and hope that Baun falls off a cliff in the final two preseason games if he wants to be a starter at linebacker.

Let’s be clear here — Werner isn’t fighting for a roster spot. He’s making the roster (barring something strange, that is) but he has to show something when the Jaguars come to town if he wants any shot at being a starter in 2021.
