Cornerbacks for New Orleans Saints to add – No. 1: Stephon Gilmore

With Xavien Howard getting extended, the best cornerback on the trade block now is Stephon Gilmore of the Patriots. While Gilmore probably won’t end up being moved, the Saints could entice the Patriots with a high draft pick in next year’s draft, helping them continue their “rebuild”.

Gilmore wouldn’t cost as much as Henderson but that’s because he’s older (he’ll turn 31 shortly into the regular season) and landed on the PUP list recently. As of now, his Week 1 status is up in the air but the Saints could still explore a trade for him. Gilmore’s recent injury could also make him a cheaper trade acquisition for New Orleans.

The Saints have been linked to Gilmore on a few occasions and there’s no doubt that he’d improve this secondary.

The biggest issue, however, is that Gilmore is banged up and could miss the early part of the season. Well, Marshon Lattimore could also miss time at the beginning of the season if he is indeed suspended. This would take the Saints’ two starting corners out of the equation and it’d be up to Brian Poole, Paulson Adebo, and Prince Amukamara to step up.

Gilmore is talented and one of the best cornerbacks in the league but is this a move the Saints should make? If they were a Super Bowl contender, maybe, but jeopardizing the future for a cornerback in his 30s might not be worth it.
