Surprises from New Orleans Saints camp – No. 1: Andrew Dowell

Without a doubt, the biggest surprise from Saints training camp through the first week and a half is linebacker Andrew Dowell, who has impressed basically since Day 1.

Nick Underhill tweeted on Tuesday that “Dowell might be the star of camp so far.” This is high praise for the former Michigan State state who went undrafted in 2019. He originally landed with the Cowboys following the draft but signed with the Saints not long after.

Dowell appeared in just one game last year and didn’t put up any stats. That’s why it’s been a huge surprise seeing him flash the way he has through the first nine days of training camp.

Linebacker was a position that was viewed as a weakness prior to the signing of Kwon Alexander but the players at the position have looked good in camp. Dowell has definitely made a name for himself in camp and could very well end up finding a role on the team in the regular season as a result.

Dowell won’t be a starter by any means but he went from an unknown to someone who can not only make the final roster but make a major impact during the course of the season.
