NOLA Saints: Linebacker is no longer a weakness with Kwon Alexander
A few weeks had passed since Kwon Alexander visited with the New Orleans Saints, but fear not Who Dat Nation — Kwon Alexander is back in the Big Easy!
This was a really good signing for the Saints for multiple reasons. First and foremost is that Alexander is a good player who was doing good things before getting injured in December of last year.
Secondly, Alexander ensures that the Saints’ linebacker group will at least be respectable now. Before this signing, the Saints were going to have to lean heavily on the likes of Zack Baun and Pete Werner and while the two have looked decent in training camp, the regular season is a whole different ball game.
The NOLA Saints signed Kwon Alexander.
The deal is just for one year, which isn’t surprising, and it’s worth up to $3 million, per Adam Schefter. This is a bargain signing for a team that doesn’t have much cash to spend but still has a lot of needs to fill.
Alexander fills a major need because now he’ll be able to open things up for Demario Davis to thrive against offenses. We saw how dominant Davis was with Alexander last year and now, history will hopefully be able to repeat itself.
The Saints have signed several free agents over the last week but none is bigger than this one. Alexander proved last year that he can fit in well with this defense but injuries prevented him from closing out the season with the team.
Injuries were why Alexander was still available to sign this late into the offseason but the Saints are willing to take a chance on their former linebacker because they’ve seen how effective he can be when healthy.
While Baun and Werner will still receive plenty of playing time, Alexander allows the Saints to be more flexible at the linebacker spot. Andrew Dowell is someone who has impressed in training camp as well so this Alexander signing really took the Saints linebackers from below average to above average.
Welcome back to New Orleans, Kwon Alexander!
