New Orleans Saints training camp takeaways

2. Ty Montgomery moving back to his old position

With the lack of wide receiver depth, it was only a matter of time before the Saints took advantage of Ty Montgomery’s versatility. Montgomery played wide receiver for the Packers before switching to running back due to the Packers’ lack of running backs at the time.

Montgomery has jumped back and forth between the two positions ever since but he’s mostly been used as a running back ever since the Saints signed him. The versatility is going to come in handy though, as the Saints had Montgomery take reps at wide receiver during practice No. 4.

Now that the Saints have insurance at running back in the form of Devonta Freeman (more on him in a bit, trust me), it opens things up to move Montgomery to wide receiver, especially with the lack of depth there.

Montgomery could be a cap casualty when it’s all said and done but his ability to play receiver should help him out when push comes to shove. We’ll see if he sticks at this position moving forward.
