New Orleans Saints: Trading for Xavien Howard isn’t logical
In a perfect world, the New Orleans Saints would be contenders to land Xavien Howard in a trade. He’s one of the best cornerbacks on the market and is unhappy with his situation in Miami, making him a trade candidate as we enter training camp season.
While Howard would be someone Saints fans would love to see in their secondary and it’s a trade I wanted to see the team make a few weeks ago, trading for him isn’t logical anymore. The biggest reason why is that the Saints aren’t nearly as desperate at cornerback anymore, as they signed Brian Poole earlier this week.
Poole now gives the Saints a decent-looking trio of starters that consist of Poole, Marshon Lattimore, and Patrick Robinson. They also have rookie Paulson Adebo waiting in the wings.
Trading for Howard won’t be a cheap endeavor for whoever does decide to pony up and land the superstar cornerback. The Saints aren’t in a position where they have the money or draft capital to land someone of Howard’s caliber. Before, this was something I was willing to overlook in order to trade for Howard but with the addition of Poole, it wouldn’t make sense anymore.
The New Orleans Saints should avoid trading for Xavien Howard.
The Saints were never really in serious talks with the Dolphins for Howard but it’s hard to argue that he’d have been an immediate difference-maker in this defense. Obviously, if the team were to work out some kind of deal for the Dolphins cornerback, fans wouldn’t complain but the fact of the matter is that the Saints have other needs to address.
The wide receiver position has now become the biggest priority for the Saints after the news of Michael Thomas’ injury surfaced late last week. The only big-time trade the Saints should be making between now and the start of the regular season is for a wide receiver.
Xavien Howard as a Saint would be fun but it’s not a need the Saints can afford to make at this time, especially considering they brought in insurance at the cornerback spot.
