New Orleans Saints All-Time Coaching Staff
Offensive Coordinator: Pete Carmichael (2009-Present)
On paper, the inclusion of Pete Carmichael Jr. as ‘OC1’ on a list of Saints all-time coaches is a slam dunk.
Even the statistics themselves, overwhelming as they may be (as evidenced by the eight top-five offensive rankings the team has achieved since the 2009 season), somehow fail to capture the full extent of just how consistently dominant the New Orleans offense has been during Carmichael’s tenure as the team’s titular offensive shot-caller.
However, in contemplating the bonafides of fifty-plus years of Saints coaching, one could lose needed context if trafficking solely in the objective.
The fact that a certain level of Carmichael’s success has emanated first from Sean Payton is without question. It is merely the extent to which this is true that is open for debate.
However, Payton is quick to credit Carmichael for the coordinator’s role in the team’s offensive accomplishments, and to bestow top-billing upon another offensive coordinator from the team’s history would be to ignore the obvious.
Honorable Mention: Mike McCarthy (2000-2004), Ed Hughes (1978-1980)
