Players to extend on Saints roster – No. 3: Marshon Lattimore

Cornerbacks are important in the NFL due to how the league has evolved to a pass-happy one. The Saints looked to have themselves a top-notch corner in Marshon Lattimore, who they took in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Lattimore played well early in his career but hasn’t been as good recently. His 2020 season was his worst one yet, as he totaled the worst PFF grade of his career with a 54.1 and the decline in production is certainly something to monitor along with recent legal issues.

That being said, he’s a 25-year-old cornerback with three Pro Bowls under his belt and his past play proves he’s capable of being one of the best corners in the league. It’d be hard to let him simply waltz into free agency and not get anything in return for him.

The Saints picked up Lattimore’s fifth-year option, which he’ll be playing under for the 2021 season if he’s still on the team come the start of the season. He’s a good player but the decline production combined with the legal issues could prevent the Saints from extending him. At the same time though, it could make him the easiest to keep around.
