Free Agents Who Could Start for New Orleans Saints – No. 2: Dede Westbrook

Dede Westbrook presents the perfect low-risk, high-reward signing for the Saints and could honestly be a starter for them in a perfect world. Westbrook is just 27 years old and is only sitting on the free-agent market right now because of an ACL injury last year in Jacksonville.

Prior to that, Westbrook was coming off two decent seasons with the Jaguars, totaling 717 receiving yards in 2018 and 660 yards in 2019. The former fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma hasn’t flashed the way many teams thought he would, but let’s give him some credit here — He’s been playing for the Jaguars.

The Saints need help at wide receiver and Westbrook could provide that. As of now, Michael Thomas is the only unquestioned starter while the rest of the options haven’t proven to be anything more than a WR3. Tre’Quan Smith has disappointed as a former third-round pick and the Saints are banking on him and UDFA Marquez Callaway to lead the charge behind Thomas this year.

Westbrook would give the Saints another decent option for Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill to throw to. Maybe he ends up disappointing or maybe — just maybe — he turns into the WR2 that New Orleans has been desperately searching for these past few years.
