  • Taysom Hill
  • Ian Book

Sean Payton surprised many by choosing Taysom Hill over Jameis Winston to replace an injured Drew Brees in the 2020 season. While Hill led the team to a 3-1 record during his stint under center, his uneven performance as the trigger man in the Saints passing offense did little to position himself as Brees’ heir.

Enter Winston, the former Heisman Trophy winner and top overall draft selection, who was elected to the Pro Bowl in his second year as a pro and led the league in passing yards in his final season with conference foe Tampa Bay.

With the gunslinging Winston at the helm, the Saints 2021 offense could represent something of a departure from those led by Brees in the latter part of his Hall of Fame career, particularly in terms of testing opposing defenses downfield.

Fourth-round pick Ian Book of Notre Dame needs to only fend off veteran Trevor Siemian to claim the third and (presumably) final quarterback spot.

Though the idea of having a veteran signal-caller such as Siemian waiting in the wings could be of interest given the way the Saints figure to deploy Hill within the offense, it is hard to imagine a scenario in which Book is not a part of the team’s active roster as a rookie.
