Saints: Richard Sherman is still a free agent and he’d be a great addition
The rumors connecting the New Orleans Saints to Richard Sherman have died down but Sherman is still available in free agency and the Saints should still be attempting to bring him to the Big Easy.
Sherman, a former fifth-round pick by the Seahawks in 2011, is heading into his 11th NFL season but has yet to sign with a team. He played for the Seahawks for seven years and was a prominent member of the Legion of Boom before landing with the 49ers and spending three years there.
Sherman brings veteran experience to the cornerback position and that’s something the Saints could use this year. They have Marshon Lattimore for at least one more year and also have Patrick Robinson and rookie Paulson Adebo. Those two will likely battle it out for one of the starting spots.
If the Saints were to sign Sherman, they’d have a surefire starter at corner. Even at age 33, Sherman still has plenty left in the tank. Injuries are likely why he’s still sitting on the free-agent market, as he appeared in just five games a year ago due to a calf injury. The season prior, however, Sherman was a featured force on the 49ers’ defense that helped get them to a Super Bowl.
The Saints still have time to sign Richard Sherman for the 2021 season.
Sherman told ESPN last month that he had indeed spoken with the Saints but that’s pretty much the last we’ve heard of him potentially landing with New Orleans. If the two sides wanted a deal to happen, one would have to think it’d have happened when the rumors were the hottest but nothing ever came of it.
Maybe the calf injury is still too concerning for the Saints to bring Sherman in but at this point, what does the team have to lose? They need to have a top 10 defense if they want to compete this year and while the injuries are cause for concern, Sherman is worth every penny when he’s healthy.
New Orleans doesn’t have a ton of money to play around with and maybe that’s the holdup here but fans are hoping that eventually a deal gets done and Sherman is wearing a Saints black and gold jersey for the 2021 season.
