Free Agents for New Orleans Saints – No. 4: Sheldon Richardson

The Saints’ defensive line was shaken up this offseason with the losses of Malcolm Brown, Trey Hendrickson, and Sheldon Rankins, and now they’ll be forced to put the pieces back together. They drafted Payton Turner in the first round in what was highly perceived as a reach but there’s optimism for the unit to be decent in 2021.

Signing Sheldon Richardson would only add to the potential of this group. Richardson, a former first-round pick in 2013 by the Jets, is a free agent after having spent the last two seasons with the Browns. He’s coming off a 4.5 sack performance in Cleveland and continues to show he can get after the quarterback.

This isn’t a move that has to be made for the Saints but if they want to add some depth to their defensive line, there might not be a better name still available in free agency than Richardson. As of now, the Saints will roll with Cameron Jordan, Marcus Davenport, David Onyemata, and Shy Tuttle as their likely starters with Turner sprinkled in there as well.

Just imagine Richardson grouped in there. That’d be one heck of a defensive line and would make what was a rough offseason for New Orleans’ d-line a much more positive one.
