Post-free agency Saints hot seat: Michael Thomas

The 6-foot-3 Michael Thomas had a killer 2019 season. He was the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year and broke the NFL’s single-season record for receptions. He also topped the NFL in receiving yards. Thomas had 149 receptions.

Building on that was no easy task, but Thomas didn’t. He struggled for most of 2020, totaling just 40 catches. Yes, him being injured is a good excuse, but this coming season, they’ll need that 2019-like production or else they won’t be nearly as good as projected.

Thomas isn’t on the hot seat in terms of his position on the team, but he’s on the hot seat in terms of he’s expected to step up in a big way and could disappoint if he can’t put up big-time numbers. Thomas should return to full strength in 2021.

A two-time All-Pro receiver, Thomas and running back Alvin Kamara will be the stars of the offense. If they can’t get going, this team won’t score often. After a massive nine-figure extension right before his breakout season, Thomas should return to that form this season.

The Saints will desperately need him to.
