Signing Sheldon Richardson would save the Saints a draft pick.

With the need that we mentioned as the first reason, this is already a position that the Saints were probably going to draft. There are first-round defensive tackle prospects like Alabama’s tackle Christian Barmore or Washington’s Levi Onwuzurike.

However, there are also prospects like Payton Turner, Jaylen Twyman, Tedarrell Slaton, and Marvin Wilson that the team could draft anywhere from the second to seventh rounds. The team does have a decent amount of picks this year.

But if the team signs Sheldon Richardson, it really adds the only missing lineman piece that they need. It would allow them not to have to use a draft pick on a defensive tackle to fill a depth spot, but it would allow them to use it elsewhere.

With the amount of talent that they had to get rid of because of the salary cap, they need all the draft picks they can get using them meticulously around the roster. The void filled by Richardson leaves them another position secured.
