Alex Anzalone — Anzalone signed with Detroit, now with Dan Campbell

The Saints likely aren’t going to be bringing back linebacker Alex Anzalone, who hit the free agency market at the end of the 2020 season. Part of the star-studded 2017 draft class, Anzalone has been one of the lone players of that group that hasn’t quite worked out for New Orleans.

Injured for most of the 2019 season, Anzalone came back in 2020 and was given the opportunity to start nine games, playing in all 16. However, he didn’t leave enough of an impact that he would be given a new contract.

Along those lines, the Saints are going to be down several linebackers and will need to add talent as the position so a reunion doesn’t seem out of the question. Anzalone, for the season, totaled 41 tackles and 3 tackles for a loss.

Pro Football Focus ranked Anzalone as the 231st-best free agent.

"“Alex Anzalone has dealt with some injury issues in the NFL just as he did in college, but he has shown the ability to make some plays in coverage, even if he hasn’t got the interception numbers to back that up. He hasn’t been beaten for a pass longer than 22 yards in any of the last three years but has struggled far more against the run,” PFF wrote."

They predicted that he’ll sign for a one-year deal worth $2 million. That has yet to come to reality, but he should find a home before the season’s commencement.
