The Saints should make an effort to sign Darren Fells
The New Orleans Saints were forced to let Jared Cook walk who was going to most likely ask for more than the Saints would be willing or able to pay him. He was coming off of a 2-year, $15 million contract that the team couldn’t keep up with.
After also releasing Josh Hill, the team was down to second-year tight end adam Trautman and a couple of tight ends who no one knows. With this being one of the positions on offense that can be improved, they might have that opportunity cheap.
The Houston Texans released veteran tight end Darren Fells earlier this week. Fells spent the last two years with the Houston Texans has had two of the most productive years of his entire career with them including multiple career-high statistics.
The Saints are in the process of filling holes at various positions with not a lot of cap space to work with; I believe Fells can be one of those guys.
Fells previously spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, and Cleveland Browns. All of which he had mediocre seasons starting between 5-12 games per season and averaging somewhere around 13 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns per season.
However, he turned his career around in Houston. Over the last two seasons, Fells totaled 55 receptions for 653 yards and 11 touchdowns. Fells turned into one of the favorite red-zone targets for superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Fells was also working off of a measly 2-year, $6.3 million deal. The Saints should be able to go after Fells and sign him for around $2-3 million per season if no one else is interested. This could a huge target for Jameis Winston next season.
The Saints are in the process of filling holes at various positions with not a lot of cap space to work with. They are searching for the ones that will give them the greatest play for the cheapest salary and I truly believe Fells can be one of those guys.
