With the New Orleans Saints going through a massive overall of their salary cap, it seems like no player’s job, position, salary, etc.. is guaranteed. The NFL set the salary cap for 2021 at $182.5 million; however, the target number for the team is even below that.

We have already seen the team release DT, Malcom Brown; WR, Emmanuel Sanders; P, Thomas Morstead; TE, Jared Cook; TE, Josh Hill; CB, Janoris Jenkins; and LB, Kwon Alexander among a handful of other player’s contracts that they have restructured.

It seems like the only thing the Saints aren’t prepared to do is sign players. Although, the team did make two crucial signings that are going to foreshadow a potential release of running back Latavius Murray within the coming weeks.

With every signing the Saints make, the more it tells who they are most likely going to cut — Murray’s time may have come.

The Saints acquired RB/WR combo Ty Montgomery late last season, but he made his impact known. Montgomery rushed 19 times for 101 yards and one touchdown in six appearances and one start. He will gain the No. 2 role should Murray not be with the team.

Last week, the team re-signed another running back Dwayne Washington to a one-year deal. Washington was the fourth-string RB on the team last year. He only rushed eight times for 15 yards in 11 appearances. He will most likely gain the No. 3 role next season.

With the Saints spending money to re-sign the above two running backs, I just simply can’t see them keeping four backs on the roster. With Murray’s contract being the highest and most expendable, the writing is on the wall for the Saints back.

As to where he will end up in 2021, time will tell. However, we do k ow that the team that decides to sign Murray will get a powerful, workhouse that will run in-between the tackles for touchdowns and push the line for first downs.
