Overview

The Saints are in a tough position both with the state of their roster and their cap space situation, but with these moves, I’m confident they can wiggle themselves out of it.

To get under the cap, they’ll have to cut ties with more of the veteran depth, while extending Marcus Williams would both help them in the short term and long term. From there, determining the futures of Marshon Lattimore, Ryan Ramczyk, and Terron Armstead, and perhaps cashing in on their respective values in trades, should be in order.

Jameis Winston makes too much sense to be the Saints’ quarterback next season, and with a deeper roster around him with some lower-level bargain-basement signings, perhaps New Orleans can remain a playoff contender in 2021. At the same time, a draft in which they target valuable and valued positions could help them replicate their fortunes from 2017.

I’m not sure if New Orleans can both be competitive next season and maximize their long-term outlook. However, this would be quite the start.

I’m excited to see what they have planned for this offseason, as most likely, this will be a franchise-defining time for them. All that is left for us on the outside to do is to sit back, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the show!
