Darren Fells, TE

The Saints are most likely going to let starting tight end Jared Cook walk in free agency. When you’re up against the cap, there really isn’t a need to keep an $8 million tight end who is rarely impactful in the offensive scheme on the team.

They also added rookie Adam Trautman who showed signs of being a good tight end last season. I don’t know if he is fully ready to take on the starting role, but he is definitely ready to take on an extended two-tight end role in the offense.

Last year in Houston, Darren Fells pulled in 21 receptions on 28 targets for 312 yards and four touchdowns. Remember, he was also on a team that ended 4-12. Cook caught 37 passes for 504 yards and 7 touchdowns.

If you give Fells the number of targets that Cook got, his stats would turn into 51 receptions for 758 yards and 10 touchdowns. Fells is younger than Cook, and his route running is more precise which would be good for a new Saints quarterback.
