The New Orleans Saints have a $100 million cap problem that Mickey Loomis will be tasked this offseason with getting under control.

Mickey Loomis is the king of pulling off cap magic, and the New Orleans Saints will need some in a big way this offseason. While most of their best players are locked up, the Saints will likely be looking to shed some cap and maintain their winning ways.

Waiting for future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees to make his decision on retirement will be step No. 1, but following Brees’ decision, the moves that Loomis will be forced to make could get interesting.

The Saints have a plethora of players hitting the open market as well, so deciding which of those players to retain at what cost will also be important.

For instance, how much safety Marcus Williams and tight end Jared Cook will be worth if the team wants to re-sign them may shape the Saints offseason strategy. Loomis probably has a good idea of how the next few months will go for this team.

Even if Brees does return, the Saints’ cap problems will still remain.

Even if they don’t re-sign many players and opt to draft and add undrafted free agents, issues may still remain. That said, let’s dive into one offensive and one defensive player the Saints could release to clear some cap space and prepare for a flourishing future.
