Overview

The Saints have benefitted from one of the game’s elite quarterbacks for a long time, but now, they will have to find the successor to Drew Brees.

However, they will have to do that in addition to clearing nearly $100 million in cap space, looking towards the future, and filling roster holes.

Thus, New Orleans needs a quarterback who can elevate the talent around him with big plays. A quarterback who does the following things should be in order:

  • Is mobile
  • Takes chances down the field
  • Doesn’t get rid of the ball too quickly if it prevents receivers from getting down the field

At the end of the day, all signs point to Winston being the team’s best option. He was in a very difficult scheme in Tampa Bay, and with turnovers being fluky, I’m curious to see how he can play with Payton, who can create more high-percentage throws for him.

This is going to be a unique offseason for the Saints. Believe it or not, but as they search for Brees’ successor, they should be looking for his polar opposite.
