Future

The last reason the Saints should give Winston the reins next year is that he has the potential to be a franchise quarterback in New Orleans. When you have to break ties with a quarterback who has been with the team for over a decade, the future is what you are looking for.

They could easily turn another way whether it be to the NFL Draft or to the free-agent market to take a chance on another quarterback. However, there is no guarantee that whoever they intend to go after will be the long-term future of the team.

The last thing that the Saints want is to bring someone in and end up in a circular motion of consistently pulling in quarterbacks who aren’t long term solutions. They already know what Winston’s game is and how he produces on the field.

Payton and his team have had an entire season of camps and practices to see what Winston is. Therefore, if they make the decision to proceed forward with Winston as their starting quarterback, they know exactly what they are doing.
