Sam Darnold

The New York Jets are going to be drafting a quarterback with their top-two pick. They’ll likely have their option of Justin Fields or Zach Wilson if they end up with the No. 2 overall pick. Trevor Lawrence is the consensus top pick in the upcoming draft.

That means Sam Darnold will be relegated to backup duties.

While he’s not a great option and not necessarily a veteran, Darnold may not be the worst player. He’s a competent passer and could do well behind a rock-solid offensive line. He’d also have something the Jets have yet to provide him with — an elite receiving corps.

The 23-year-old former top-five pick had six touchdowns and nine interceptions this season. He’s yet to have a season with his touchdowns were more than six over his interceptions. He must be better, and in New Orleans, there should be hope he can be.

In his second year in the league, leading the Jets to a 7-6 record, Darnold threw for 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He completed 62 percent of his passes. It’s not a sexy addition for the Saints, but it’s one that could keep them contending.

He comes in at No. 5 for that reason, but he should, at the very least, be available this offseason.
